Lovell Smokes Burns!

The Lovell Bulldogs hosted the Burns Broncs on Friday night under the lights. The Bulldogs were victorious with the scoreboard showing 20 to 0 at the end of the game. Lovell came out tentative and careful in the first half. The defense was good but not great and the offense kept moving the ball but nothing much was happening. There was no score in the first half from either team. The coaches must have done some pretty good talking during half time because the Bulldogs came out of the locker room ready to play. Burns defense started widening out because of some successful pitches and short passes. This opened up the inside running game and Billy was able to run through a gap for a touch down. Dino did some great running off of some pitch-outs. He ended the game with two touchdowns. Lovell completed two of the three PAT's to give Lovell the win.

The mothers of the football players hosted an after game dinner for the Burns football players. The young men were very gracious and thankful for the food. They were, very quiet and subdued after their loss. We visited with some of the parents who also joined in the meal. The Burns team always travels with their bronc. They brought this cute little pony to the game and it grazed along the sideline for most of the game. I don't know exactly what the pony does normally. I suppose they let it run down the field when they get a touchdown or something like that. Anyway, I asked the lady if their pony had a tough trip since it was a seven hour trek up here to Lovell. She said that although they take their pony to every game, this time the family that is usually in charge knew some people in Greybull who let them borrow one of their horses.

Lovell will play Thermopolis next. Lovell is #1 for team defense in 2A but Thermopolis is #1 in team offense. So this should be a very interesting game. Spike says that we can win that game if and only if we play the whole game like we know we can. We can't come to that game like we did this one. The offense has to be able to pass and run. Our defense will have to stay strong. Every player will need to come ready to play. In other football news, the Greybull Buffs beat Newcastle, which is what we expected, but Hayden Goton reportedly broke his ankle in the process. We were really hoping that next week Greybull would beat Big Horn. Their chances are slim without their running game. You never know though, their coach is pretty darn smart and might be able to come up with another game plan. I would really like to see Lovell and Greybull in the Championship game at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie in two weeks. I know we can't look ahead and we need to just concentrate on the next game but......wouldn't it be cool?!?
